Foundation for Energy Saving in Gdańsk [Fundacja Poszanowania Energii w Gdańsku] was established in 1991 as the first of its kind in Poland. The founders were Gdańsk University of Technology, Power and Heating Plants “Gdańsk”, [Zespół Elektrociepłowni „Gdańsk”], Power Plant in Gdańsk [Zakład Energetyczny w Gdańsk], Pomorskie Gas Supplier in Gdańsk [Pomorski Okręgowy Zakład Gazownictwa w Gdańsku] and seven environmentally oriented individuals and members of the scientific and technical community. The statutory objective of the Foundation, from its instigation, is operating towards reasonable energy management, including use of renewable energy resources and consequently improvement of the natural environment.
The Foundation’s activity covers the following key areas:
- education and training for students, youth and teachers in secondary schools,
- promotion and advisory activity regarding energy saving and environment friendly solutions and technologies taking into account renewable energy resources,
- project development, expertises, programmes and opinions on practical ecological education and generally understood energy economy.
The first two areas, i.e. education, training and promotion - advisory related activity is conducted by the Demonstration and Training Centre [Ośrodek Demonstracyjno-Szkoleniowy] , established in 1995 with the support and of the authorities of Gdańsk University of Technology, Voivodship Fund for Environmental Protection (WFOŚ) in Gdańsk and companies operating in the power sector.
One of the technological halls at the Faculty of Chemistry was adapted and renovated to suit the needs of the Demonstration and Training Centre. Several companies helped to equip the Centre; among them : VIESSMANN, DANFOSS, VAILLANT, GEJZER, ABB ZAMECH, APV, CONVECTOR, HERZ, HEWALEX, UNIMOR and others.
Foundation for Energy Saving in Gdańsk also focuses on cooperation with the industry and scientific research community represented by the Gdańsk University of Technology, The Szewalski Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk, as well as general energy recipients.
Within seventeen years of operation the Foundation has and continues to cooperate with major industrial entities in the TriCity and Pomorskie Voivodship. These include: Heating Plants [Okręgowe Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej] in Gdynia, Gdańsk Heating Plant [Gdańskie Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej] in Gdańsk, Power and Heating Plants Wybrzeże [Elektrociepłownie Wybrzeże], Northern Shipyard [Stocznia Północna] and Shiprepair Yard in Gdańsk [Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa], Gdańsk and Gdynia Shipyards, Pomeranian Gas Company [Pomorska Spółka Gazownictwa] in Gdańsk (former PGNiG), Power Supplier ENERGA [Koncern Energetyczny ENERGA], Petrobaltic and Energobaltic in Gdańsk, Water Supplier Saur Neptun Gdańsk, Waste Treatment Plant [Zakład Unieszkodliwiania Odpadów] in Gdynia, Waste Treatment Plant [Zakład Utylizacji Odpadów] in Szadółki and practically all heating plants operating in the Pomorskie Voivodship.
Experts cooperating with the Foundation have the theoretical expertise, research experience and practical knowledge of energy issues and optimal use of the environment. Persons cooperating with the Foundation on a regular basis hold many awards granted by the Energy Auditors Associations [Zrzeszenie Audytorów Energetycznych] seated in Warsaw for developing energy audits. Energy Auditors Associations awarded the title of the best energy audit : for a multi-family house in 2002, for a public facility in 2004 and in 2003 for auditing heat resources, to experts in Gdańsk cooperating with the Foundation for Energy Saving in Gdańsk on a regular basis. Cooperation has enabled the Foundation to collect a database on the technical condition of many industrial plants, their plans for upgrading facilities as well as the power demands and plans of tens of the biggest towns cities and gminas in Pomorskie Voivodship. The data was obtained on the grounds of a study running since 1998 called Draft assumptions for heat, electrical power and gas supply for towns /gminas [Projekt założeń do planu zaopatrzenia
w ciepło, energię elektryczną i paliwa gazowe dla miasta/gminy].
It should be noted that in this period FES in Gdańsk [FPE w Gdańsku] has developed over 40 energy plans for towns and rural gminas, including the towns: Gdynia, Wejherowo, Chojnice, Lębork, Rumia, Reda, Sztum, Kartuzy, Władysławowo, Skarszewy, Czersk, Prabuty, Nowy Staw and for the biggest gminas in the voivodship, i.e. gmina Chojnice, Puck, Krokowa, Stegna and many others.
Foundation for Energy Saving is also the author of the Regional Energy Strategy accounting for renewable resources of energy for Pomorskie Voivodship in the years 2007-2025”. [Regionalna Strategia Energetyki z uwzględnieniem źródeł odnawialnych dla Województwa Pomorskiego na lata 2007-2025”] for the Marshall’s Office. This strategy was approved (Resolution No 1098/LII/06) by Pomorskie Voivodship Self Government Parliament [Sejmik Województwa Pomorskiego] on 23 October 2006.
The Foundation structure embraces a Programme Council comprising outstanding scientists and experts, a 4 members of Board.
Our Foundation is seated at the Gdańsk University of Technology, it has two office rooms, a training room and laboratory for renewable energy resources. The Foundation archives include documentation of 17 years of scientific research and assumptions for practical implementation.
